Guidance from local movers
Plan smarter, move calmer - a practical checklist you can skim, tick or print.
Whether you’re weeks away or packing tonight, these hints and tips help you prepare efficiently, protect your belongings and make move day feel straightforward. Keep this page open as a checklist, or print it and tick items off as you go.
Plan your move
Pack smart & prepare
Start early and declutter so you only move what you need. Pack room‑by‑room and use smaller boxes for heavy items.
Wrap breakables individually (plates on edge, glasses upright). Label cartons on three sides with room and priority, keep documents and valuables with you, and use wardrobe cartons to move hanging clothes crease‑free.
We can supply boxes, tape and paper if you’re self‑packing - or our trained team can handle full or fragile‑only packing, usually the day before your move.
If you are opting for any level of packing service offered by us, there is a few important things to note as there is certain items that we cannot pack due to health and safety pre-cautions, and some that we cannot be held liable for. This includes but is not limited to;
Access, timing & the big day
Good access saves time and stress. If your street has residents’ bays, Red Routes, double‑yellows or time limits, you may need parking suspensions or permissions - tell us at survey and we’ll advise.
Defrost the fridge/freezer 24–48 hours before, take photos of meter readings at both addresses, and set aside an essentials box (kettle, mugs, snacks, towels, loo roll, chargers, bedding, basic tools).
Keep passports and keys by the kettle (and if we’re packing, we won’t pack the kettle until the end). Separate hazardous items like paint, bleach and aerosols, as these aren’t insured to be transported.
If your home policy doesn’t cover the move, speak to the surveyor - we can arrange move cover up to £50,000. After you arrive, set up a Royal Mail redirect or finish updating addresses.
